Facts About Headie

Since inception of the awards in 2006, the Hip Hop World Awards plaque has become synonymous to artistic ingenuity and excellence. Winning the plaque has also become a career defining moment for many artistes.
‘Headie’ is the name given to the Hip Hop World Awards gold plaque.
The Headie plaque represents the image and the shout of a young, vibrant man whose talent can challenge that of Nas, Mode 9, Kanye West, Sound Sultan and Jay Z combined but who has almost lost confidence in his abilities in the face of daunting odds presented by the Nigerian environment.
NOTES
  • The image of Headie was conceptualized by Ayo Animashaun and drawn by Matthias Aragbada.
The first Headie plaque was done by Jide Adewoye.
  • In 2008, Headie became 21k gold plated; produced in the UK after failed attempts to get the same quality locally.
  • The present Headie plaque is a mixture of resin, copper, steel, marble and gold.
  • Headie is sometimes referred to as Sound Sultan after the musician of the same name. The similarity was first mentioned by Mode 9 after winning a Headie plaque in 2006.
Over years, the Awards have been synonymous with the host, the slogan and the venues.
In 2006, the awards was hosted by Dare Art Alade at the Shell Hall, Muson Centre in Lagos, Nigeria.
